District puts focus on wellness

The Wayne Highlands Wellness Committee is bringing in fresh ideas for the 2018-2019 school year.

Last spring, we began working on a new wellness website and are continuing to add information to the site throughout the school year. Earlier this month, the Wayne Highlands Wellness Committee met to get their yearly wellness initiatives in order. The first initiatives were our Monthly Wellness Blasts and the 6th Annual Homecoming Hustle and community service project.

Monthly wellness blasts are emailed to all Wayne Highlands School District employees and posted on the WHSD Wellness website.

The wellness blasts are written by wellness committee members and include information about specific health topics to help faculty and staff in and out of the classroom.

This year, Lori Sheldon, the district’s technology integration specialist, created a newsletter format to make them more user-friendly.

The Wayne Highlands Wellness Committee is also pleased to announce that the 6th Annual Homecoming Hustle will be held on Sunday, September 30th at 1:30 p.m. at the Wayne Highlands School District track complex.

The Homecoming Hustle has become a popular community 5k walk/run that takes place on the varsity cross country course.

There is no registration, no charge, no trophies, and participants can run or walk the course.

While the 5k begins at 1:30, DJ Kameron, with Triple “S” DJ Services, will be there starting at 1pm to play some tunes to get everyone in race mode.

Fox Ledge will be donating water for the sixth year in a row for the water stations along the course and at the finish line.

Longtime runners Fred and Cathy Howell will, once again, be donating the coveted “finishing beads” for each participant crossing the finish line.

Varsity XC Coach Lindsey Pender will be starting the race and her runners will be helping guide participants along the course.

Coach Carly Propst will have her field hockey team there to provide their fun “hockey stick finish line tunnel.” Coach Ryan Chulada will have the wrestling team there to man water stations, clear the course, and leave everything in great shape.

Honesdale XC and the Wayne Highlands Wellness Committee are teaming up to collect grab ‘n go snacks for children in need in our K-8 schools. This community service project will culminate at the home XC meet on Tuesday, October 2nd at 4:45 p.m. We are in need of any single serving size packaged, non–perishable snacks (examples: granola bars, popcorn, pretzels, crackers, pudding, nuts, and seeds). After the XC meet, the items will be evenly distributed to our K-8 schools where the guidance departments will make sure they get to students in need. The Wayne Highlands Wellness Committee would like to invite the community to the 6th Annual Homecoming Hustle on Sunday, September 30th for an afternoon of fun, music, community service, and, most importantly, exercise. Please bring a donation for the students in our K-8 schools!
